As of this writing, Frankfurt-Hahn Scenery X (for FSX obviously) is still in Beta Stage, and will be released next week.

The FSX version will be available first, and then FS9 and X-Plane 10 next.

Carenado Launched, Grounded And Relaunched PA46T Malibu Turboprop

That is what happened if Carenado launched real aircraft and Service Pack equal to major repair.

Just a few days after the initial launch, Carenado released Service Pack 20120113 for PA46T.

This service pack fixes some issues related to Reality XP integration and the operation of some switches and buttons when GNS430 and/or GNS530 from Reality XP was installed.

To get this service pack, log in to your Carenado account, and go to the updates section. But if you download the aircraft after January 13th, 2012 you do not need to download this service pack.

This game will available in Spring 2012, and the starter pack is free to play that includes the Icon A5 and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Anchorage Ted Stevens International (PANC) one of the most important airports in Alaskas and destination of many national and international flight connections. There probably is no place on the globe where aviation is as important as in Alaska. In this great state roads are scarce and limited to the major cities. The vast wilderness can only be reached by aircraft. Often only by floatplane or small aircraft equipped for off airport landings. And Anchorage International Airport ‘Ted Stevens’ is at the center of much of this aviation.

It is in many ways a remarkable airport. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9) On Ubuntu

I installed Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9) On Ubuntu 11.10 with Wine 1.3.28 on HP 540 Laptop. It runs good so far. The only problem I noticed is the sound intermittently missing.

The multi disc installation process was easy, I just have to manually mount the next disc via Wine configuration > Drives setting.

Here are some screen shoots I took. Enjoy.

Just run setup.exe and you're ready for FS9 installation...

After installation, FS9 ready to run for the first time....

In version 1.20 The scenery has been completely overhauled and now offers new technical highlights and an optimized display of details and performance. The approach lights including the lead-in lighting system is now brighter, more realistic and implemented as 3D object. AES-Lite includes animated vehicle traffic on and around the airport for more realism.

Things you may want to know about FSX successor, the Microsoft Flight:

although it main selling point is on-line experience, it can be played off-line and doesn't need you to stay on-line the whole time,
there would be ad-hoc Free Flight mode,
continuing what started in FSX there would be mission and free flight mode,
with mission naturally comes awards, achievements, and experience points,

And here's Flight's minimum requirement :

CPU: Dual Core 2.0 GHz
GPU: 256 MB card capable of shader 3.0 (DX 9.0c compliant)
Hard Disk : 10 GB Hard Drive space
OS: WinXP SP3
RAM: 2.0GB

Sounds like no need to hurry for upgrade, if you already fly FSX well.

Just wondering what is the implication of the deletion of "Simulator" in the title. My guess is, this move is meant to make the title less frightening thus broadening the market for more type of virtual pilots from different ages and skills. (update : oops already explained in Flight FAQ).

This is version 3 of this pack, meaning some bugs are fixed, e.g :

Fixed Airlines.cfg / Aircraft.cfg so that many existing CALLSIGN work and are spelled correctly in game.

I Am Surprised By HAWX Sales Number

Usually I don’t get excited by sales number but I found some interesting fact today that I think worth posting.

When HAWX was announced for 3 platforms (PC, PS3 and Xbox360) , I thought HAWX for PC will have greatest sales number, but I was wrong. Look at this chart from Amazon.

As of this writing, Hawx for Xbox360 is on #99, PS3’s is on #150 and PC’s is on #592 in Amazon Video Games sales chart.

What could this means? Are PC pilots not interested in Arcade-y flight simulation?

Product description :

This Flight Sim Flight Calculator will calculate distance and arrival times for both FSX and FS2004 The program has four input components, Local Time Zone, Departing Airport, Destination Airport and the Aircraft to be used for the flight. The program calculates the distance in nautical miles between two FlightSim Airports. It determines the flight length in hours and then calculates the Arrival time. If the flight time passes midnight the arrival day is incremented by one day. Keep in mind these distances and times are based on point to point calculations and do not allow for taxi out, taxi in, start-up times etc. To compensate for this you can input a time period in minutes which is automatically added to the flight time to give a more accurate estimate of arrival times. You will also need the TTools program by Lee Swordy in order to build the aircraft and airport text files.

Mamba Games Plans Flight Sim Expansions

Mamba Games via Gamasutra just announced this, read and smile FSX pilots;

Interestingly, amongst the company's revealed products are the global rights to six third-party Microsoft Flight Simulator X add-ons to be released over a two-year period.

This comes less than a week after news that Microsoft effectively dissolved ACES Studio, the development team responsible for the Flight Simulator series. The first of these third-party expansions is developer RealFlight's Grumman F6F Hellcat, which is slated for March 27.

I was hoping someone will take over Ms Flight Simulator (I know most of us think it is impossible) to ensure its future releases but still this is a good news after last week super awful news. Just keep hoping, nothing is impossible.

Mamba Games is co-founded by former THQ executive Robert Nielson.

Do I even have to describe this plane? Every military aircraft enthusiast must already know about this Mach 3 beast. Just look at this picture of SR-71...awesome... This beast is so fast, when a SAM missile is coming all it has to do is accelerating...bu-bye missile...

X-Plane Is The Future?

To FSX (and earlier) Pilots out there :

While things are going down in Microsoft Flight Simulator side, things are going up in X-Plane's. Thanks to sales of iPhone version of X-Plane.
So being a small company has its own advantages and edges, I suppose.
This post is not about me being X-Plane fanboy. I don't even fly X-Plane. It's my take about Ms's latest financial decision that leave us ACES-less and probably, probably, no FS11 in foreseeable future.
Even if Ms FS was no more, there's life beyond Ms FS, dear FSX pilots. There is X-Plane.

X-Plane strong points:

Although small compared to FSX team, X-Plane caters a broader range of customers, based on OS alone, X-Plane available for Windows, Mac and Linux. So no matter what OS you run there's a way to enjoy virtual sky. While there is now way Ms Flight Simulator will available to Mac neither Linux,
Updates, this year alone X-Plane 9 will see at least version 9.30 and 9.40. The current version is 9.20. ,
Almost 70 Gigs 1st Party Scenery,
even USAF choose X-Plane as their simulator

If X-Plane is not your thing, FSX still and will have tons of add ons to keep it up and running. Take FS2004 for example, how many year has passed since its release and we still flying about with it and have fun? And even better, with newer, better, cheaper hardware.

Take heart, it’s not the end.

FS11's Fate Still In The Dark

Microsoft has confirmed the closure of Aces Game Studio. Does this mean the end of Flight Simulator series? According to Kelda Rericha of Edelman, Microsoft's public relations firm :

"We are committed to the Flight Simulator franchise which has proven to be a successful PC based game for the last 27 years. You should expect us to continue to invest in enabling great LIVE experiences on Windows, including flying games, but we have nothing specific to announce at this time."

So what does that mean exactly? Does "flying games" includes Flight Simulator Series or not?

"Flying games" sounds game-ish and not simulator-ish to me. Like Rebel Raiders or Ace Combat kind of game. I'm afraid we'll going to have a dumbed-down flight simulator on Xbox360. Since consoles market is more lucrative to MS these days. I hope not...

Sad news come from ACES studio, the very team that brought us Microsoft Flight Simulator series.
Gamasutra has the news, that recent job cuts in Microsoft also affects ACES.

a large portion of the dev house's staff has been let go - with multiple reports indicating that the entire Flight Simulator team has been axed.

And this is what I call a bad news.
Fellow sim-pilots, embrace your self, the future of FS11 is now unclear.

FSX Enhanced Autogen World Package | Free Scenery Download for FSX

It’s a free scenery add on or should I say an upgrade for FSX. This addon needs two files installed, the original files and an updater.

This package upgrades 522 world wide autogen building textures and changes the entire FSX world. What is an interdictor? It is an aircraft designed to bomb enemy supply operations.

What I like most is its ability to sweep its wing to increase aerodynamic thus more speed. Here’s shown F111 with its wings unswept.

Javelin MK-20 for X-Plane

I am no aircraft expert so when I heard Javelin MK-20 add on I didn’t have slightest imagination how it looks. My best guess was it’s a jet fighter. And I was wrong, slightly.

After a wiki session, I know that ATG Javelin is a civilian personal jet the interesting part is that the Javelin has a design resembling a fighter jet. Awesome. See the picture below yourself.

ATG Javelin Mk-10 is the civil version, Mk-20 is the basic phase 2+ jet trainer while the Mk-30 is an advanced trainer derivative of the Mk-20, with more powerful engines, enhanced avionics and an embedded simulation and virtual training system. (source : airforce technology)

X-Plane for iPhone and iPod Launched

Laminar Research has released two new variations of its X-Plane flight simulator for the iPhone and iPod touch; X-Plane Airliner and X-Plane Helicopter. Each are available for $4.99 from the App Store.

X-Plane Airliner features :

four different jumbo jets Boeing 777, 747, 787, or Airbus A-380.
simulates the long-range instrument-capable flying.
control of throttle, flaps, speed brakes and trim, and incorporates a full Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS)
There are 42 NAVAIDs and 98 airports spread over 60 x 180 miles of terrain (bigger than the “regular” version of X-Plane for the iPhone).

I love the idea of mobile flight simulator, but on second thought, I feel my 17” monitor is too small to fly flight simulator, I can’t imagine flying on smaller one.

Revisiting FlightGear.org

As the only(?) open source flight simulator, FlightGear has many potential. But when I visited flightgear.org this morning I saw no updates since last time, and that was a long time ago.

Here’s to show you how good FlightGear is. Some screenshot I borrowed from the site hence the watermark on the pics. They show V-22 Osprey in-flight and on land.

I had downloading problem earlier when I wrote last post about FlightGear. But now I am armed with unlimited internet data plan, so I don’t have to worry about download time and size anymore :) yes, I’m a happy man. I’ll download and try it myself now. You should too.

Dover Air Force Base has a new toy, that is highly enviable by the rest of us. It’s a $23 million C-17 simulator. This state-of-the-art and not-your-regular-priced simulator is capable of replicating a variety of flying conditions and emergency scenarios powered by $18 million Boeing simulator inside. From in-flight refueling to missile avoidance tactics.

Not just its price tag is high its operating cost per hour is enough to buy one next-generation video games console plus some games. How much? $500 per hour, it’s far more cheaper than operating the real thing of course which is $18,000 per hour.

It was a game from 1993, a stand alone (not an addon) game from Thalion Software.

The company was formed by a group of demo coders in October 1988 in Gütersloh, Germany. The main aim of Thalion Software was to produce cutting edge technology games. Despite the technical quality the sales were never really satisfying and the company went bankrupt in the end.

While the modern games emphasize the graphic/sound quality department, older games due to lack of CPU power tried to cope that with story telling thus creating an atmosphere of the real thing and that’s what we pursue in flight simulator. A feeling of being there.

Tool To Improve FSX Performance

You must already know that to improve FSX performance you must free as many resources as possible from unnecessary applications.

With this little free tool, FSX Processkiller, now you can kill unneeded applications for better FSX performance.

Note from the maker, I quote it as it is:

This file is basing upon Microsoft .NET framework v. 3.5. You can download the .NET Framework from Microsoft. This program should run on WinXP and Windows Vista. Use on own risk!

This tool will try to kill processes for better FSX performance. The processes to kill are stored in app.config. You can easily add processes there via the "Add to Killlist" button. You can delete them via "Reset Killlist" button. With "Kill Processes" all processes stored in app.config will be tried to be terminated.

F-19 Stealth Fighter, o how thou rocked my world. It was my first flight simulator on my first PC. Man it feels like thousand years ago. This game taught me a lot about flight and military term : ILS, AMRAAM, Sidewinder and many more.

Back then it was MCGA monitor, no joystick but wow it was awesome.

My original copy was lost eaten by the dust of memory, in short it’s gone. Although some website offer a free download of this game, I still have question about its legality. Even it is an old game I think the maker still hold the copyright, right?

Damn, my hand itch to click that download button.

When you play and follow Flight Simulator development year after year, you’ll appreciate more what we got these days. I do.

FYI : only years after then I did know that F-19 is a fictional stealth fighter and developed by Sid Meier. So sue me.

Well cr(azy)eative people, I mean that as compliment, at Smart Bomb Interactive is developing a new flight combat game named Snoopy: World War I Flying Ace.

The details are scarce right now, but let’s see how it turn out. Exciting.

Aircraft Financing : When Virtual Aircrafts Are Not Enough

It all started with the love for the real thing.

For me it was DHC6 Twin Otter. My first aircraft love. Her twin turboprops, her tricycle landing gears, her long nose and how she moved on the runway, so graceful and amazing :)

You must have at least one favorite aircraft, don’t you? That you’re longing to have and to hold.

Every flight simulator pilots yearns for the real thing. The real aircraft. We don’t sit in front of our multi monitors computer day to day basis with plastic flight simulator yoke because we love our computer so much but because we love to fly, we love how the engine started sounds like. We long to defy gravity and being in the air. Flight simulator software is our place to ease that longing.

And sometimes that doesn’t enough. And neither your money.

Maybe it’s time for you to think about aircraft financing to buy on credit new aircraft or used aircraft. There’s a lot of aircraft financing companies out there that can serve your need and match your financial plan.

Google it and you may find.

Me? I’ll stick to my flight simulator yoke for a little err… big longer.

The Private Jet Pilots

Lemon Law and Lemon Aircraft

It’s Friday and I have no flight simulator related post to write.

I am not familiar with law terms so when I read some article that had Lemon Law written on it I thought Lemon Law was law that had something to do with lemon plantation and its worker :) it’s not. It’s totally different things.

What is Lemon Law ?

Lemon law is American state laws that provide a remedy for purchasers of cars that repeatedly fail to meet standards of quality and performance.

How Lemon Law got its name?

It all started when a Lemon Grove resident, Rosemary Shahan, got a problem with a car dealership when she tried to repair her car after an accident. She was promised a speedy job but after 3 month waiting with no avail she decided to picket the dealership and it lasted for five months. During this 5 months she was enduring harsh words and not pleasant gestures. She then supported by fellow consumers and started a citizen movement for lemon laws.

Do aircraft buyers protected by Lemon Law? Or is there such thing as Lemon Aircrafts?

Maybe, aircrafts are another form of cars too if you think about it. In fact there are cars that can transform to aircraft and vice versa. What’s it name? I don’t remember.

How To Play FSX in Dual Monitors or Multi Monitors

I have a LG 17” LCD monitor and an old 17” Samsung CRT refurbished monitor. You must already knew that even though they have same 17” size they’re practically different. LCD monitor has bigger viewable area. It’s way cooler too :) So I have two monitors different in size and resolution.

I have Nvidia 7300 LE graphic card which come with one analog VGA connector, one TV output connector and one DVI connector.

And I want to fly FSX in dual monitor.

How to play FSX in Dual Monitors? This is how I did it:

shut down and disconnect computer from power outlet,
I plug my first monitor to VGA output,
I buy DVI to VGA adapter and plug my second monitor there (see picture below),
start up my computer
set Nvidia to dual view mode from Control Panel –> Nvidia Control Panel (see picture below). I’ve tried horizontal span but FSX won’t span in full-screen mode, you have to stretch the window manually in windowed FSX mode. And it looks awful in two monitors with different size and resolution,
fire up FSX
Start your flight as usual, you’ll notice that your second monitor will show blank screen. Press Alt->Views->New Views choose whatever view your heart desires.
Grab and drag that new view window to your second monitor and resize as necessary. Basically you can grab and drag any window to that second monitor from throttle, GPS view, aerial view map, spot view, other aircrafts, you name it. But from my experience I don’t recommend to put another aircraft view or anything that far away from your aircraft on the second monitor since it will make your system works harder and make FSX (or the VGA card?) unstable and will crash your computer.

How to span view on identical multi monitors?

If you have two or three identical monitors that you want to use with FSX or any other games especially FPS genre you might want to consider using Matrox TripleHead2Go.

This hardware will span (not just stretch) your view all across monitors and give you peripheral view you couldn’t see before and gives you broader view of your virtual surroundings. Matrox TripleHead2Go come in Analog and Digital Edition.

How To Download Real World Weather for FSX?

FSX lets you to have as real as it gets experience by providing real time real-world weather. Forget default weather themes, download the real-world weather and retain your pride as (almost) real pilot :)

For real-world weather there are two choices i.e.: static and dynamic (updated every 15 minutes).

Those of you (including myself) who are on online budget constraint static real-world weather scheme is good enough although it is cool to have in-game weather updates every 15 minutes.

How to download real-world weather in FSX? It’s easy :

run FSX, your beloved flight simulator software,
Open Free Flight,
On Current Weather click Change,
Choose your destiny eer I mean real-world weather preference
and then click OK
Wait for a while until FSX downloads the weather

Now you know how flight to Hawaii in this time of year would feels like.

Sleeping ATC

Things are get worrying up there in the world of aviation, after a news about sleeping pilots and now there is sleeping ATC in Greek island of Lesbos (yup that’s correct, Lesbos).

It made two airplanes had to circle above the Aegean Sea for more than half an hour. And now that’s something you won’t find in Flight Simulator, a sleeping ATC.
